RSS Roundtable Dinner San Francisco (Oct 17th)

October 3, 2006

It is that time again for another RSS Roundtable Dinner. The intent is to bring together leaders in the industry with those just starting to understand RSS for a casual conversation over drinks and dinner. We will be meeting in San Francisco Oct 17 in conjunction with the Direct Marketing Association's (DMA) Annual Conference. The last event was in New York and we had a packed room of over 40 people attend. Because the roundtable is during the DMA show, the theme for this event will be dmRSS - using RSS as a direct marketing tool.

We are pleased to have SimpleFeed as a new sponsor. They are joining a line-up of great thought leaders who are supporting the RSS Roundtable including SilverPop and Pheedo.

[Update - Oct 9] Proud to have PRWeb back as a sponsor of the event. They have been a long-term supporter.

The intent of this meeting is to discuss a number of key issues facing the Direct Marketing industry and understand how RSS can drive sales for DMer's. This meeting will also serve as a vehicle for our key industry partners to discuss challenges and viable solutions, as well as come to a mutual understanding of goals and objectives that we all have for dmRSS. Lastly, we will have an opportunity to collaborate, as leaders in the industry, on how we can increase the rate of RSS adoption among information consumers. Attendees will also be encouraged to share their stories.

Where: Near the Giant's Ball Park. Event location details will be sent to interested parties as seating is limited.
Time: 6:00PM - 10:30PM, Drinks from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Dinner at 8pm. Agenda will start during dinner.
Date: Oct 17
Cost: Free dinner, beer/wine sponsored by Silverpop, SimpleFeed & Pheedo
RSVP: Send an email to bill AT Pheedo.com with your name, email, telephone and company

Topics:
There are so many topics that we can collectively address as an industry, however, it's critical that we focus on the important few that address issues of dmRSS usage.

We will focus on key industry issues that are preventing business adoption of RSS. Below are the high-level issues that we'll cover. We will pull additional hot topics from the attendees. Again, this event is meant to be interactive.

--> Is it the right time for DMer's to pay attention to RSS
--> Understand where RSS & Email fit together
--> Leverage current content/assets to take advantage of RSS
--> Using RSS as an alternative to search during the Holiday '06 season

Attendees:
Ideally, the event will attract around 40 high level leaders from within the RSS and Advertising industries including the following disciplines.

RSS Manufacturer
RSS Advertising
RSS Readers
RSS Services
RSS Convergence
RSS Research
Retailers
Email Marketers

If you are interested in attending, please send an email to bill AT Pheedo.com with your name, email, telephone and company name/address. Restuarant location will be forwarded in a follow-up email.

R$$ at OMMA - New York - 9/25 - 26

September 21, 2006

If you're going to be at OMMA East next week, why not drop in at our session on RSS. If you're interested in meeting up on Monday or Tuesday during the show, drop me a line at dana [at] pheedo.com.

Does RSS = R$$? Feeding Publisher Profitability
RSS has already changed the way the world consumes media, moving the web toward a subscription model, where users decide what content to receive and when. And in turn, RSS is changing the world in which advertisers can spread their message. Publishers can now accurately measure their audience for feeds and choose the best approach for inserting advertisements. Feeds offer not only a choice of audience but perhaps more importantly, an audience who has chosen to listen. This panel discussion will examine the benefits of the engaged RSS subscriber and how he or she can be measured. What does the future of advertising look like with RSS subscriber rates growing by the millions? How can reader data be harnessed to produce impactful creative? What's the best way to monetize RSS readers--with CPC or CPM rates?

When? Monday 9/25 - 11:15am - 12:00pm - Online Content Track

Speakers:
Jake Dobkin, Publisher and Founder, The Gothamist
Jeff Hinz, SVP, Director of Client Services, ID Media
Ed Manning, Vice President of Business Development, Private Label, NewsGator
Scott Cherkin, Director of Business Development, Travel Ad Network
Moderator: Dana VanDen Heuvel, Director of Business Development, Pheedo

The session is programmed as a roundtable discussion, so there will be plenty of opportunity for audience Q&A!

WKRN Blogger Meetup Follow-up

September 10, 2006

Thanks to Mike Sechrist, Terry Heaton and the crew at WKRN in Nashville for putting together a stellar blogger meet-up this past Saturday. Nashvilleistalking.com is their amazing citizen media project that's brought together about 500 bloggers from the Nashville area to contribute not only to their own blogs but also to the Nashville Is Talking aggregator blog. There were between 40-70 bloggers there when I counted and not a one of them was live blogging (save for a post or two on their Treos)

Steve Safran posted a few good wrap-ups of the speakers and attendees over at LostRemote.com. There were a couple of comments with questions on Pheedo and RSS ads, so I thought I'd take this opportunity to clear things up a bit.

"Dan" asked:

I’m trying to “get” how RSS helps me sell more stuff. I went to the Pheedo site and still am so dense. I don’t understand. Could you (explain) it to me?

Dan (and Steve), here's some thoughts on RSS advertising, assuming that you're in the game to sell stuff. Though, the presentation at the event was for bloggers and was all about getting ads into your feeds, it's good to see that there are advertisers lurking out there too! I left a comment on the blog, but it appears that comment moderation is turned on for anything that has a URL address in it, so here's my response.

Dan & Steve,

Sorry if the RSS advertising message isn’t clear. Let me try to clear things up a bit.

Dan, I presume that you’re seeking to be an advertiser, as you’re interested in how RSS helps you sell more stuff. I don’t know that it’s any more complicated than saying that RSS advertising is not unlike any other ad medium in that, well, it’s advertising. It is, however, quite unlike any other medium when you think of the opportunity to reach a very niche audience based on content category (more on our content categories here: http://www.pheedo.com/node/17).

The point that Steve Safran made about the percentages is that RSS readers stay in the aggregator environment around 90% of the time, and only click through on CONTENT items about 8-12% of the time. Ergo, there’s a great opportunity to reach RSS readers with your brand message while in the aggregator environment. I say brand message because unlike search, where users are seeking content/information with a certain ‘intent’ (purchase?), in RSS, they are necessarily seeking things with intent, thus a higher frequency branding campaign tends to be more effective.

I’m happy to expand on this more if you’d like. Drop me an email at: dana [at] pheedo.com

RSS Roundtable Dinner New York (May 16th)

May 8, 2006

Continuing our conversation from the success we had at the RSS Roundtable Dinner in San Francisco during Ad:Tech, we will be meeting in New York May 16th during the Syndicate Conference. We had over 40 people attend the last Roundtable. Because it was during Ad:Tech it was a bit more focused on the marketing/advertising aspect of RSS. The New York Dinner will slant toward the technology side of RSS.

We are happy to announce that SilverPop is a new co-host. They are joining a line-up of great thought leaders who are supporting the RSS Roundtable in including iUpload, PRWeb and Pheedo.

The intent of this meeting is to discuss a number of key issues facing our industry and it's chances for continued success. This meeting will also serve as a vehicle for our key industry partners to discuss mutual challenges and viable solutions, as well as come to a mutual understanding of goals and objectives that we all have for RSS. Lastly, we will have an opportunity to collaborate, as leaders in the industry, on how we can increase the rate of RSS adoption among information consumers. Attendees will also be encouraged to share their stories.

RSS Dinner Round-up

May 1, 2006

At Ad:tech we held the second RSS Roundtable. We had a lively crowd with a spectrum of interests in attendence including Publishers, Advertisers, Tool Providers, Press and Ad Networks. A few comments on the show from Rebecca Lieb at ClickZ and Susan Kuchinskas at Internetnews.com & 360techblog provided their thoughts.

Please save the date for our third RSS Roundtable Dinner May 15 at 8:00 pm in New York during the Syndicate Conference. This dinner will take on a more tech focus where the last dinner had more of consumer/advertising focus.

Below are the notes from the dinner in San Francisco April 27. Add your comments as well. We'll pick up the conversation in New York in May. The take-away is, there are a lot of questions around the business of RSS.

Server based aggregators will win in the end - functionality will win.

IE7 --- Gillmor - who cares?

Hard to put new things on the desktop (netnewswire, etc) in the enterprise though, so RSS integration in IE is good for adoption

IE7 might help to just generally raise awareness of what RSS is

Gillmor - Pew study is bogus

People don't need to know what RSS is. RSS will drive adoption.

Once a technology is ingrained in content delivery, becomes part of computers - Cdrom, hard drive. Comes standard once necessary.

Lock in model for RSS - no model yet, but people are trying different ones

Monetizing - putting ads in feeds is good, but if user uses yahoo or google, ads in feeds compete with ads on the page.

CNET has feeds cause they need to do it, but what's the hope? Rather people read content on the web.

ClickZ - not worth selling RSS ads for ad salespeople cause no money there for them and RSS takes away traffic from site which hurts sales too. But same trend with print media/internet.

Converting email to RSS - Is RSS going to integrate into email?

Newsgator - plug in model for IE. RSS experience is so different from email so there will be resistance to integrate them.

Newsgator is too device specific, not ubiquitous

Download and take with you model or EVDO? Rojo gives full mobility.

Attensa: RSS will replace communication in the enterprise. Feeds with ads will be a small amount of traffic. Most will be in the enterprise space.

People are afraid of the revenue stream.

Gillmor does not thing it's "very early" in RSS adoption is very high right now.

Once you go RSS, you don't go back

No difference between and RSS page and a webpage in terms of advertising

Partial feed or full feed? Consumer will go for full feed with ads instead of partial without more control.

Feeds will be capable of more rich media.

"RSS feed reader optimization" --- publishers giving readers what they want to see

Ease of use - Is this the problem with adoption???

RSS Industry Night Roundtable Recap

December 16, 2005

First, I want to thank Rok Hrastnik for moderating the evening. He's done such a great job of staying 'swiss-like neutral' in this space that he was able to take the point on this event and bring everyone together.

Between this evening event on the first night of Syndicate San Francisco, where we had a veritable 'who's who' of the RSS industry, and the syndication industry's announcement on Structured Blogging, which Pheedo supports, we're continuing to feel the impact of the growing RSS Economy.

Rok gives a full coverage report on his site, so you can read the details there. Thanks again to everyone that showed up and contributed to the discussion! We look forward to being part of this again in another city at another time.

Last but not least, I have to tell you that real progress was made with Greg Reinacker of NewsGator in on point for drafting specs on the 'noindex' tag.

Measuring the Blogosphere - Event

August 24, 2005

The current state-of-the art to measuring popularity of blogs is to measure the number of links in/out of from the blog. Link counting doesn't tell the entire story. Mary Hodder will be leading a discussion on developing new measures that would benefit readers, writers, advertisers, PR practitioners and businesses wanting to engage bloggers and RSS content producers.

Discussion topics will include:
- Current metrics include limited ways of valuing blogs and rss feeds
- Developing context around a blogger is difficult with those values but there are some things that can be done
- Topic communities are difficult to find and assess, but these are coming
- Blog search right now is very much alpha, similar to search in 1997, when the choices were Excite or Infoseek or the old Yahoo..
- Developing new measures would benefit readers, writers, advertisers, PR people and businesses wanting to engage bloggers and rss content producers
- Community based standard to facilitate this process and ask for measurement tools and better ways to express the weightiness of conversationalness of bloggers and conversations across topic communities.

RSS in Tokyo

July 29, 2005

Today, Tokyo had the first look at the Pheedo solution. Our partners in Japan, AD2, introduced the local press and publisher community to Pheedo's RSS Advertising/Analytics platform. The room was packed with professionals eager to learn about RSS and RSS advertising. In attendance, was Six Apart, About, AOL, Autobytel, Become, and Fujitsu to name a few. I had the opporutnity to meet Japan's version of Robert Scoble, uber blogger Hiro Ogawa. Through an interpreter, I had the honor of presenting US RSS market data.

109-0961_IMG.JPG

What was exciting to see was the growth of RSS in the Japanese market. The President of Root Communications, Mr. Koji Tsukada, shared RSS subscriber growth (chart below) of one of their sites. He pointed out RSS is growing in Japan with no promotion. The Japanese RSS adoption rate is higher compared to the US market. Overall penetration is lower but according to Tsukada, "the environment is ready."

RSS Growth.png

A large portal that provides blogs to its users shared that the most popular blog categories included Diary, Soccer, Work, & Diet. Business blogging came in as the 13th most popular category.

Pheedo Japan is currently in beta.

Learn more about AttentionXML from its cheerleader

January 25, 2005

Join Steve Gillmor Feb 1 from 6:30pm - 9:00pm at the University of Phoenix in Concord, CA as he discusses AttentionXML. The event is brought to you by ebig.org's Blogging & RSS Special Interest Group. More information on event location

Blogs are a great for information sharing and community building, but it doesn't take too long to get overwhelmed. Even if you've set up your feeds in an rss reader to aggregate the content, it's easy to get overwhelmed by too much content.

Steve Gillmor, journalist with ZDNET, will join us to talk about AttentionXML, a concept he's been instrumental in forming. AttentionXML is a new technology initiative that will present a richer view than that available through just a static list of rss feeds. This new standard, still under discussion and development, will help you manage your blogroll, turning it from a list into an interactive, filtered stream of content. AttentionXML injects intelligence back into the system, as it will use data gathered on what you are reading when to help improve the community understanding of what great content is. It will let you "vote" with your attention, to make the content that is collectively most valued most accesible. Why not harness the power of your social network and the larger community of readers so you stay in synch with the blogosphere.

Blogs and the law

December 8, 2004

Pheedo's very own legal council and COO Charles Smith explained the legalities of blogging to a group of San Francisco Bay Area EBIG.org members. Eric Rice was in attendance and did an amazing job of explaining the details of the event. Look for more information on this topic from EBIG in the coming months.

[update]
Steve Tennant also shares his notes on the session.
Mike at Bitsplitter adds his notes on creative commons.

All worth a read as they add their own interruption.

Can-Spam Seminar Notes

April 15, 2004

I recently participated in EBIG’s “Ten Things Every California Business Needs to Know About The CAN-SPAM Act” workshop. The event was hosted by NetHawk Interactive. It was a lively conversation attended by 30 business professionals.

Below are a few notes and links to the slides. Feel free to add your comments.

Charles Smith, Fastlane Ventures Legal Counsel, kicked off the event with "Ten rules of compliancy. The CAN-SPAM Act dissected into digestible and actionable items.” His slides are the first I've seen that make the CAN-SPAM Act easy to understand. The law, according to Charles, is loosely written. It will take many hours of litigation in order to clearly define the grey areas. The law is so loosely written, I was informed, one has to be careful even with signature files in your general email. His advice is to seek legal counsel when establishing an email marketing protocol.

Next, Jerry Hart, Jerry Hart Creative Service, gave a lively presentation on “Construct an email marketing campaign that complies and thrives in the new legal environment.” Jerry's slides spell out what you need to do.

Joseph Karwat, Qordia Communications surprised me with “The hidden costs of Email. How much is SPAM really hurting your company?” He opened up my eyes to the true cost of spam. In 2003 SPAM cost US businesses $10 – $87 billion. See Joe’s slides for more stats on the cost of email.

Lastly, I lead a discussion on “RSS the Can-SPAM magic bullet ? Life after email.” The discussion, as you can see from the slides, was intended to inform marketers on an alternative to email marketing. But even marketers hate spam. The group discussed how RSS can solve individual SPAM issues. RSS is very early. It is a good medium for one-to-many communications vs. one-to-one like email. Overtime, RSS will decrease the amount of SPAM in your email inbox because you are trading one form of content consumption for another. Consuming content in this manner is 100% opt-in, leaving it completely under your control. You no longer have to provide your email address when you want to receive updates/newsletters from sites. RSS decreases SPAM but doesn’t eliminate it.

Thanks to all who attended. Your participation in the discussion was valuable. If your interested in continuing the discussion on RSS and Weblogs, I will be leading a discussion April 26 at RSS Neighborhood. The event is free and open to everyone. Details can be found on Pheedo.
